Deep in the laurisilva forest of Paul da Serra, Rabaçal is the trailhead for Madeira's most famous hikes. From here, paths lead to the magical 25 Fontes (25 Springs) and the dramatic 100-meter Risco waterfall—two of the island's most photographed natural wonders.
How to Get to Rabaçal by Bus
Rabaçal is accessible via the highland plateau route:

The 25 Fontes trail (PR6) leads to a natural amphitheater with 25 springs cascading into a lagoon—about 4.5km one way. The Risco waterfall trail is shorter (about 30 min one way) and leads to a dramatic 100m cascade. The ancient laurisilva forest here is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The forestry house has basic facilities and picnic areas.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and early summer offer the best water flow and weather. Start early (before 10am) to avoid crowds and ensure you have time for the round trip. The trails can be slippery—wear proper hiking boots. Allow 4-5 hours for both trails combined.
